This individual will collaborate closely with the Lead Mechanical Engineer to help build our mechanical design services department so that we can better serve the growing Passive House, Net-Zero and low-energy building community in Canada.

Our focus at this time is to bolster our plumbing and fire protection design services, and with this in mind, the ideal candidate will have experience in designing plumbing, drainage, and fire protection systems for commercial and residential buildings in compliance with Part 7 of the Ontario Building Code and relevant NFPA codes. Given our company’s focus on low-energy buildings, preference will also be given to any candidates that can demonstrate design experience with energy and water saving systems such as heat pumps (VRF/VRV, geothermal, air-to-water), radiant floor and panel designs, cordwood / pellet boilers, solar thermal, heat recovery equipment, rainwater cisterns, and graywater systems.

Roles and responsibilities will include preparing schematic, concept and detailed designs, carrying out design and equipment sizing calculations, drawing/layout production, and attending/facilitating meetings with clients. This individual will also be required to provide other support services to more senior staff which may include energy analysis, writing/contributing to reports, carrying out product/design research, as well as, cataloging preferred equipment specifications and costs. While buildings are under construction, the Building Mechanical Systems Designer will also be expected to provide support during site reviews, onsite testing, and commissioning activities.

Because our company is on the leading edge of sustainability and renewable energy generation, the nature of our work is always changing. For this reason, the Building Mechanical Systems Designer may be provided with other opportunities and assigned other duties not provided in this job description as the services we offer to our clients evolves over time. These may include building condition assessments and energy audits (relating to mechanical equipment) and building system commissioning.

It is also worth noting that Zon plans to transition to using Autodesk Revit for all drawing and layout production in the next year. The ideal candidate will be proficient in the use of Revit, and have the skills necessary to help lead this software transition in the coming months.
